Please find above the chapter that I wrote in the publication that was launched at the United Nations Habitat - World Urban Forum (WUF) in Abu Dhabi (Feb. 8-13).

This paper summarizes the Cities of Love journey going from producing international feature-films illustrating love in prominent cities, to contributing to sustainable urban development globally.

BUILDING EMPOWERING MEDIA ECOSYSTEMS FOR CITIES by Emmanuel Benbihy - When we envision sustainable urban development, we omit a key element that makes everything possible at the scale required: sustainable media and content. Traditional film and media industries are under the influence of unsound industry logics. Their pursuit of profit, therefore of people’s attention at any cost, has become detrimental to human development. Instead of creating nurtured content, private media owners tend to appeal to the lowest impulses of their audience. Our future lies in cities and urban communities. We have an opportunity to create positive media outlets and responsible media ecosystems under the umbrella of these cities whose purpose will be to reconnect us with life, to empower us as urban citizens, and to inspire us to take part in sustainable development. Media has a duty to reconnect people, serve development and promote diversity and peace. The Cities of Love global initiative is applying innovative media models to the smart and sustainable development of cities. It has started to demonstrate the positive impact when city authorities, businesses, creative professionals and urban citizens come together to celebrate urban life and act for development. Using smart media to help build smart cities, and to engage people towards a better future, is fundamental today. Using social media to spread good news and to help people convey pride and happiness in being together are key contributions to human prosperity. Together, we can give media a completely new role in our societies, and we can create and showcase content that entertains, inspires people and drives sustainable development.

EMMANUEL BENBIHY, Producer, Cities of Love global initiative / Shanghai, China - Emmanuel Benbihy has 25 years of experience as a creator, strategist and film producer. He has been living in Shanghai since 2009. With the movie Paris, je t’aime, he created the ‘Cities of Love’ series, now pursuing its journey around the world (New York, Rio, Berlin, Jerusalem, LA, Shanghai, to name a few). The ‘Cities of Love’ global initiative is building the ‘communities of the people who love their cities’ through creative city-centric media platforms and initiatives. Benbihy is developing a network of non-profit enterprises whose purpose is to engage millions, lift spirits, foster creative contribution to city life and support sustainable urban development.

Interview of E.Benbihy by The Chinese Film Market in Cannes Here is an article just published during the Shanghai International Film Festival 2014 explaining the recent development of the Cities of Love franchise in China, and the set up of a non-profit foundation dedicated to launch City, I Love You platforms. After Paris, New York, and Rio, the Cities of Love global initiative is now in the process of expanding through a network of social enterprises and non-profit local foundations doing good for cities, making people proud of their city and at having a positive impact on their lives: through visuals arts and social media, it will illustrate the story of their inhabitants with a community-driven perspective. In China, we will develop our first initiatives in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Chengdu, Shenzhen and Hangzhou.

Georgia does its own take on Cities of Love film sequence

"Unlike its previous unsuccessful sequences, I found this film is much deeper and fuller of love for the city of Tbilisi. It also carries a more meaningful message of that no matter what your city, and country, is going through, despite all the troubled times there might be, the residents of the city find the ways to love the city and stay faithful to their city just as one is supposed to do with a good friend or relative – no matter of whether one’s experiencing happy or sad times, the true love and/or friendship is when one’s always by his/her side in good and bad times."

‘Tbilisi, I Love You’ Opening Next Month In Georgia

Tbilisi, I Love You, part of Emmanuel Benbihy’s Cities Of Love franchise that started with Paris Je T’Aime and New York, I Love You, has set a February 20 release date in Georgia. The movie is a series of 10 short films that are written and directed by natives of Georgia and take on a personal narrative about the republic’s capital city. Malcolm McDowell and Ron Perlman both feature. McDowell’s vignette centers on an actor who reluctantly agrees to a one-month shoot in Tbilisi and develops a love affair with the city. Perlman’s short sees him as a nameless American motorcyclist who rides through Tbilisi’s remote areas with a woman named Freedom. Tbilisi, I Love You is produced by Storyman Pictures David and Nika Agiashvili. Credo Cinema’s Jason Speer, Ever So Close’s Benbihy, as well as Paata Trapaidze are exec producers. A festival schedule is being determined.
